Author visit - Seth Burkett
Wed 11 Dec 2024We welcomed a very special guest in the library this week, Seth Burkett. Seth is not only a writer, Ghost writer, professional footballer, and a motivational speaker but he also has a very incredible story about his time as a footballer in Brazil. Year 8’s enjoyed an assembly, about his career and how he became an author, he was in the library at lunchtime signing autographs and the day ended with a Persuasive Writing workshop with a Year 7 library lesson class of 30 students. It was interesting to watch the kids try and effectively influence each other using evidence and reasoning, with Seths professional guidance. The argument remains, who is better Messi V. Ronaldo???
It was lovey to see that most of the books that inspired him when he was growing up, are available in our library for the pupils to borrow. By the end of the visit, the kids learned a lot about hard work, passion and following their dreams. Seth showed us that if you are brave enough to take on new challenges, amazing things can happen.
Signed copies of Seth Burkett’s books are available to borrow from the library.

“I want to become a manga artist and I told him that my parents want me to get a regular job I asked him what he thinks I should do. He said why don’t you try a regular job and if that doesn’t work out, you can try manga. I asked him how much money he makes, and he said not a lot, but he gets a chance to work for big brands like Nike which make it all worth it and he makes a living that way”

Moulsham High School wins prestigious award for supporting students who are young carers
Tue 12 Nov 2024Moulsham High School has won a prestigious award for its work supporting young carers with their education.
The school was presented with the Young Carers in Schools award on 30th September 2024. Young carers are children under 18 who are responsible for the care of a family member with who, due to illness, disability, mental health condition or addiction, can’t cope without their support.
The award is part of the Young Carers in School programme run by charities The Children’s Society and Carers Trust. The programme provides primary and secondary schools across England with step-by-step guidance for teachers, leaders and non-teaching staff to gain the practical tools they need to help young carers.
Led by Miss Nawaz, Moulsham High School won the award by demonstrating how it supports young carers. This includes running homework clubs and drop-in sessions with a member of staff responsible for this vulnerable group of pupils. Miss Nawaz's efforts in supporting young carers in schools have been highly impactful. Through her dedication to raising awareness and providing support, she has helped create a more inclusive environment for these students. Winning the Young Carers in Schools Award is a well-deserved recognition of her hard work and commitment to making a positive difference.
Research by Carers Trust shows 40% of young carers say they don’t get enough support to balance education and caring. Separate research by The Children’s Society shows young carers get an average of one grade lower in GCSE subjects than their peers and they often also have lower levels of self-confidence and mental wellbeing.
Statutory guidance makes clear that all school staff should be particularly alert to the potential need for early help for young carers. The Young Carers in School programme is a way of helping schools address this.
Vicky Morgan, Carers Trust’s Head of Young Carers at Young Adult Carers, said:
“We’re delighted to present the Young Carers in Schools award to Moulsham High School. Figures show there are two young carers in every classroom but balancing learning with looking after family members can be tough without help. By identifying young carers and putting support in place, schools and teachers can make a huge difference to their wellbeing and education. That’s why the brilliant work done by staff at Moulsham High School is so vital and why this award is so richly deserved.”
Lisa Witherden, Head of National Programmes at The Children’s Society said:
"Recent figures from the school census highlight that nearly 80% of schools reported they had zero young carers in their pupil population. We know this simply isn't true and that young carers are a hidden group of children and young people who need support to achieve the same level of success as their peers at school. We're absolutely thrilled that Moulsham High School has achieved the Young Carers in Schools award, demonstrating their commitment to identifying these hidden children and young people and ensuring they get the vital support they need to thrive in education and in life beyond school."
The Young Carers in School programme is open to all schools in England. To sign up, visit www.youngcarersinschools.com

Netball Update
Wed 08 May 2024Year 7
We have a busy season with limited numbers we have managed to filed a team for every game. All players have shown great commitment to training a even in the colder darker months!! Games have been against some strong opposition with one victory this year. Massive improvements have been made across the season and hopefully with some new members who still want to join next season we will go from strength to strength. Special mention to following for help sorting teams Poppy Everad, Ellie Nevelle and Katie Arthurton as well as been core members of all of our games.
Year 8
Earning promotion form last year, the team was determined to continue their winning ways. They achieved this with flying colours with some games being won by 20 goals! With their last game against Becket Keys on the 19th March, with a convincing win of 17-4, they secured top spot of Division 2 . This now means they will be promoted to division 1 next year.
They have also competed in the district tournament on the 20th March. Playing a round robin the team came second to Great Baddow. Again the whole season has been strong and commitment will need to continue to win some games next year in the top division. (photo attached of district winning team)
Olivia J, Ellie C, Nancy C, Ava F, Emily B, Isobel C, Olvia W, Lowri W, Edie-Rose R
Year 9
Again gaining promotion from last year games have been tough this year. Players have shown great resilience and determination in some very close games. They wins will hopefully help to maintain their position in division 2 for next year. Also special mention goes to Izzy Bower, Emma Sweeny and Mathilda Thatcher for help with checking teams.
As well as this along with Emily Holmes they have regularly helped out with coaching of the year 7and 8 teams. All showing fabulous leadership skills!
Year 10
Playing in a higher division this year, we have seen closely fought games. The whole team has worked hard to progressing ball down the court as well as using the channels - favourite phrase!
The final game highlighted their ability work well as unit coming form behind to beat Brentwood County High School. Special mention goes to Sophie Lawrence and Katie Cox - who have also developed their coaching skills at the 7/8 training sessions.
Well done all, season finished now, but look out for a potential summer league club in summer term.

New Character Points!
Wed 31 Jan 2024This term sees the launch of our new Moulsham High School ‘Character Points’. This will replace the BFL (Behaviour for Learning or Achievement Points). The new points system is inline with our whole school ethos of ‘Enjoy, Enrich, Achieve’ to nurture the students ‘Character’ which is a fundamental part of their development.
Assemblies have taken place as part of the launch explaining the importance of all these Character Values and given examples of how they can achieve Character Points from staff whether it is in lesson, around school, or involvement in extra-curricular activities.
Students will keep the points that they accrued so far but from this term on, they will be renamed as ‘Character Points’ and issued under the 9 Character Virtues. They initially count for 1 point (same as BFLs) and staff can award up to 3 points at a time. We will continue to celebrate in assemblies the House, Forms, and individual students that are achieving the most points.
Here are just some examples of New Year, New Term goals that students can do to develop Character and achieve Character Points:
- Join a new club
- Undertake the Moulsham Award
- Complete online learning such as Mathswatch
- Enter a House competition
- Read at least 3 books before ½ term
- Research careers or courses
·
Aim to achieve at 1 character point a day
Thanks to our Student leadership team: Will Smith, Heidi Ryder, Ellie Matthams, Jack Roberts, Rory Aisworth and Ruby Walker for contributing to the launch with students whilst also undertaking their Year 13 Prelims.
