This Thursday, 30 January, we are holding our Year 9 Options Evening for students and their parents/carers.

The evening will run from 6pm - 8pm with presentations from Miss Mead (Headteacher) and Mr Alford (Year 9 Standards and Progress Leader) at 6.15pm and 7.15pm. Representatives from each department will be in attendance to provide additional, subject-specific information.

During the evening you will be given a hard copy of the KS4 Curriculum Booklet and your child’s options form.

    What happens next?

The Options Evening will be followed by the Year 9 Parents’ Evening on Thursday, 6 February.   At this, you will have an opportunity to talk to your child's subject teachers about their academic progress and options choices.  Members of the pastoral and student support teams will also be present.

  • Student account of the Year 11 Spanish trip to Valencia

    Tue 28 Jan 2020

    Year 11 Valencia Trip

    by Binita M, Year 11

From the 17th to the 21st December 2019, myself and 33 GCSE Spanish students travelled to Valencia, allowing us to be able to experience the remarkable Spanish culture, as well as to broaden and immerse our speaking skills; this proved difficult at times but was a great opportunity for us to practice and embrace the Spanish language.

When we arrived, we first visited the Valencia Cathedral, where we learnt about the background history behind the culture of Spain. After that, we were privileged enough to take a 217-step staircase up to the top of the cathedral to spectate the astonishing views of Valencia.

Then, we had some free time to explore locally and to further capture the amazing landscapes and Christmas decorations amongst the city, while engaging with Spanish speakers to enhance our speaking skills.

In the evening, dinner was also a valuable experience as we were able to taste the food of Spain, therefore we gained a better understanding of the culture behind food. Also, dinner was a useful time to practice how to order drinks in Spanish, while giving us the opportunity to socialise with our friends.

On the second day, we had a 5-minute walk to Valencia’s Central Market, where we were able to view the traditions of Spanish food: including their sweet pastries, meats and cheeses. Here, we had a great opportunity to enhance our Spanish speaking skills when we were required to buy our own food, as well as any souvenirs, from the stalls. After that, we had another walk to the Institute of Modern Art which allowed us to observe and further explore the incredible culture within Spain. Then, we had some more free time to grab some lunch and explore the local areas. After lunch, we had a guided tour at Valencia FC Stadium, where we had access to the football ground, the changing rooms, the seating area, the V.I.P box and much more; this was an excellent experience (especially for the football lovers amongst the group)!

On the next day, we went to the Oceanogràfic aquarium, where we got to see the amazing wildlife. We then went to the Hemisferie where we watched a 360º Volcano Film projection in Spanish, allowing us to practice our listening skills. Following the projection, we had some free time to have lunch and to explore El Salar Shopping Centre to further apply our speaking skills when purchasing items.

As our extraordinary trip came to an end, we spent our day at the beach, experiencing the chaos of public transport! In addition, we were required to use our speaking skills to approach the bus driver and to ask for a ticket. Overall, this trip was a great opportunity to express what we have learnt in our past 2 years of doing the Spanish GCSE- especially through our speaking and listening; and it was most definitely a trip to remember. Also, I just want to say a huge thank you (on behalf of the Spanish students) to Mrs Green, Miss Young, Mr McKeown and Mr Price for making the experience a memorable one and encouraging us to grab opportunities when possible.

  • MHS hosts Year 6 Students at the Book Café

    Wed 22 Jan 2020

Over the last week Librarian, Mrs Hales, hosted pupils from Moulsham Junior School and St Cedds School in the MHS library for our annual Book Café.

The Book Café invites current Year 6 students from local schools, to MHS where they are show a new way of looking a books. A way which allows them to gain confidence in being able to choose a book that is right for them. Some students struggle finding books that are the correct reading level, or the right genre. This ‘book tasting’ activity gives students the practice and skills to choose just the right books, books they will enjoy. As the author James Patterson says, “There's no such thing as a kid who hates reading. There are kids who love reading, and kids who are reading the wrong books.” The visits also enable pupils who will start Year 7 next academic year to experience a secondary school environment before their transition.

Once again this year’s visits have been a great success with St Cedd’s saying “A huge thank you for this morning. It is so good to be reminded about the secondary school setting and the loveliness of the library and all the amazing work you do. It was great to see our Year 6 students so engaged in reading and thinking about the books.” Moulsham Junior School told how the session sparked conversation once they were back at school; “Thank you for the book cafe yesterday. I had lots of discussions with the children about the books they tasted.”

We look forward to welcoming Mildmay Junior School next week and a big thank you to Mrs Hales for hosting such a wonderful event.

  • Record attendance for MHS at Cross Country Champions in Liverpool

    Tue 21 Jan 2020

Last weekend saw four of our running stars represent Mid-Essex in the Essex Schools Cross Country Championships. We’re incredibly proud to say that all four of our students, Tom W, Hannah B, Faye S and Lauryn W have been picked to represent Essex at the Inter Counties Championships in Chelmsford next month.

Heading to Liverpool in March for the English Schools Cross Country Championships will be Tom W, who was star of the day winning his junior boys race and becoming Essex champion. Lauryn W who came 6th in the inter girls race and Hannah B, who achieved fourth place in the senior girls race. Lauryn, Tom and Hannah making it to the championships is a record for the school who have never had so many students representing both us, and Essex, in the competition.

A fantastic achievement for all and you should be very proud, on behalf of MHS, congratulations and good luck!
