Media Studies

Subject Leader - Mr D Shields

The media plays a central role in the lives of everyone, young and old.  Our communities, our homes, even our bedrooms, are saturated with media.  Whether it is the TV show we interact with by voting for our favourite singer, the newspaper we never pay for because we get the same content for free online, the text message we get to tell us that our team has scored, the film trailers we sit through before the film starts or the social network we catch up with the gossip through, the media is inescapable. Our young people are, in many ways the target audiences of many publishers, music promoters, games companies and TV networks. This is why Media Studies at Moulsham provides our students with the tools to un-pack, decode and truly understand the messages and products they encounter every day.

The study of media at Moulsham is rigorous and academic. We learn to decode film and television texts by appreciating cinematography and mise-en-scène, analyse magazines and news papers, and consider the role and impact of digital media. Furthermore, the impressive creativity of our students is nurtured and by the variety of challenging practical tasks including storyboards for film, full-length music videos, complex advertising campaigns, film trailers, websites, marketing packages and feature articles.

The Media Studies department has grown rapidly and we now offer GCSE, AS and A2 level courses in both Media and Film Studies. Alongside this, Moulsham provides hands-on experience of media production, with a clear focus on gaining industry standard professionalism, in the form of BTEC Level 3 in Creative Media at KS5.
