Gap year
About Gap Years
A gap year (sometimes referred to as a sabbatical) is when someone takes a break from work or education to travel, volunteer, or work abroad (sometimes all 3!).
A gap year can be beneficial for people who wish to:
- gain some work experience in their chosen field before continuing their studies
- explore different places before studying abroad
- improve their skills or grades before applying for further study
The Law
UK law means that once you finish your year 11 education, you must do one of the following until you're 18:
- stay in full-time education, for example at a sixth form or college
- start an apprenticeship or traineeship
- spend 20 hours or more a week working or volunteering, while in part-time education or training
