MHS hosts Year 6 Students at the Book Café

Over the last week Librarian, Mrs Hales, hosted pupils from Moulsham Junior School and St Cedds School in the MHS library for our annual Book Café.

The Book Café invites current Year 6 students from local schools, to MHS where they are show a new way of looking a books. A way which allows them to gain confidence in being able to choose a book that is right for them. Some students struggle finding books that are the correct reading level, or the right genre. This ‘book tasting’ activity gives students the practice and skills to choose just the right books, books they will enjoy. As the author James Patterson says, “There's no such thing as a kid who hates reading. There are kids who love reading, and kids who are reading the wrong books.” The visits also enable pupils who will start Year 7 next academic year to experience a secondary school environment before their transition.

Once again this year’s visits have been a great success with St Cedd’s saying “A huge thank you for this morning. It is so good to be reminded about the secondary school setting and the loveliness of the library and all the amazing work you do. It was great to see our Year 6 students so engaged in reading and thinking about the books.” Moulsham Junior School told how the session sparked conversation once they were back at school; “Thank you for the book cafe yesterday. I had lots of discussions with the children about the books they tasted.”

We look forward to welcoming Mildmay Junior School next week and a big thank you to Mrs Hales for hosting such a wonderful event.
