Bridge Academy Trust Book Awards
Tue 27 Jun 2023Moulsham' Library hosted the first BAT Book Awards Ceremony on 22nd June.
Students from Moulsham High, Notley High and Ramsey Academy came together to celebrate and discover which book had been voted as our winner. Five books had been shortlisted and this was the second visit to Moulsham High for Book Club students, who had also joined us last term for author Ele Fountain’s visit. It was great to meet again and hear about how Ele’s visit had inspired them.
Students voted the spooky and funny Dread Wood by Jennifer Killick as our 2023 winner! This book about a Saturday detention at Dread Wood High School really grabbed the attention of our students!
We awarded certificates and prizes for Most Enthusiastic Book Group Member (jointly awarded to Olga (Year7) and Sophie (Year 8), Best Review, Best Poster and Best Creative Writing.
It was great to see students chatting to each other about their favourite books and working together to win the book-related quizzes. We had a fantastic day and are looking forward to the BAT Book Awards 2024!
We were pleased with all the positive feedback from Notley and Ramsey students. Comments from Moulsham High students included:
'I loved the BAT Book Awards! The quizzes were so much fun and it was nice meting with other schools. It was no surprise Dread Wood won as I really enjoyed the book!' - Ashlee Year 7
'I really enjoyed the BAT Book Awards. Melt was my favourite book – I was disappointed it didn’t win! I hope to do it again next year' - Madeline ( Year7)
'The BAT Book Awards were amazing! I read books I probably wouldn’t have read otherwise and thoroughly enjoyed them. I am very pleased that Dread Wood won, it was my favourite!' Imogen (Year 7)
Well done to all the students who participated in the Book Awards!

District Sports 2023
Wed 21 Jun 2023Yesterday a large number of our students went to the district athletics at Melbourne Stadium. We had a massive number of our students making finals and it was probably one of our best ever days as we produced a number of district champions and top three finishers. Star of the day was DOUBLE DISTRICT CHAMPION Chimuka H who won the high jump and 100m breaking the district record by running 11.11 seconds. Unfortunately there was not time for the relays due to the day over running but I am sure he would have become triple district champion if this had been run as they had made the finals.
Other district champions:
Holly B- Y7 Hurdles
Ava F Y7 200m
Lucy A- Y7 Long jump
2nd position.
Lance K Y9 Long jump
Hana S Y10 Shot putt
Alice P Y10 Javelin
James D Y8 Shot putt
Chloe H Y8 800m
Hugo Y Y9 800m

Curve Ball Cup
Fri 16 Jun 2023Curve Foundation, who are a local Chelmsford based charity, specialising in supporting children and young people with mental health issues, put on their first ever football tournament and family event, called ‘The Curve Ball Cup’ on Sunday 11th June 2023.
The event saw eight football teams come together in seven-a-side games, to compete for the Curve Ball Cup Trophy.
The teams/players very kindly secured sponsorship for the event, to fundraise for the important work that Curve
Foundation does.
Currently, Curve Foundation have two regular counsellors, that provide support to the students of Moulsham High School for a majority of the week. Since the Covid 19 pandemic, the number of young people suffering with their mental health has increased dramatically and wait times with the NHS to see a counsellor, are ridiculously long. Curve is helping to bridge this gap by providing free counselling in Chelmsford, thanks to donations, sponsorship and support from the local
community and businesses.
The ‘Curve Ball Cup’ was the first event of it’s kind, that we have hosted as a charity, which we hope to repeat for many years to come. The event was held at Moulsham High School and families came to support their teams and browse the stalls who attended.
It was a fantastic day, the sun was shining down and there was a brilliant atmosphere. The Mayor of Chelmsford,
Councillor Linda Mascot, very kindly attended the event to present the winning team with the trophy and also to hand out medals to the teams who took part.
Dandara won the first ever Curve Ball Cup, with Inter- Springfield as runners up.
If you would like to support Curve Foundation or have an idea for an event/ fundraising etc please do get in touch with us .

Essex County Schools' Athletics Championships
Wed 14 Jun 2023On Saturday 10th June, the Essex County Schools’ Athletics Championships took place in Thurrock. Qualification for this event took place a few weeks ago, when Hugo Y and Harrison D were the two Moulsham athletes selected to take part. Emma C was also selected in reserve for the 800m. However, during the preceding week a contestant from the 3000m event withdrew, so Emma was promoted to step in for her first experience racing in the 3000m event.
Chimuka H was also initially placed in reserve for the 100m, however there was a dropout in the 200m event, so he was promoted to run this race - another first time!
First up was Hugo, who competed in the 800m event. He performed admirably in the first heat, finishing 4th, making it through to the final. He then came back a few hours later to finish a fantastic 4th overall in Essex, after running another 2.13 time, against highly competitive athletes, whereas Hugo’s usual background is in Football. He was only 1 second away from securing a medal!
Next up was Chimuka, running his first ever 200m. He secured a time of 24.01, finishing 2nd in his heat, making it through to the final, where he ran in 24.05, to finish in 5th in Essex - half a second away from securing a medal. Again a fantastic achievement from someone who does not usually train for athletics.
Then we had both Emma and Harrison running their first ever 3000m, on the hottest day of the year! Both applied themselves fantastically well, with Emma winning a Bronze medal and then Harrison finishing in 7th.

Macbeth Theatre Workshop
Mon 16 Jan 2023On 10th January, the wonderful Box Clever Theatre Company performed a sixty minute version of Macbeth, to the whole of Year 11, in the school auditorium, followed by a Q and A session and workshop, engaging students in the art of dramatic performance. While Macbeth is one of their key GCSE Literature texts, and therefore the workshop will have been useful in ensuring they know the plot and characters of the play, this experience was much more than being just about exams.
The year group engaged with the experience marvellously. Not only was the performance dramatic and engaging, the students behaviour was impeccable and the Q and A and workshop that followed, showcased how important seeing and getting involved with dramatic performance is, for all students. They were great!
Year 11 did themselves proud and there was a real ‘buzz’ afterwards and I have to say it was one the most enjoyable performances we have had at the school, in my many years at Moulsham. I know that for some students, this was their first taste of Shakespeare live on stage and I really do hope many of them go on to be inspired by what they saw, and to make theatre going a part of their life in the future. Although the weather was “foul”, it was a very “fair” day at school, indeed and my thanks to Year 11 for being so fantastic.

“What has been very clear to me since the formulation of our trust is that our children (& adults) are involved in some truly wonderful things outside of school. We now want to recognise and celebrate the children’s community work, and to encourage and promote more children to get involved in community activities and projects too, and, at the same time, to see what more our local communities can do to support our schools and children too. Our Local Governing Committees are working on this and much more.” - Mark Famer, CEO
All nominated students shall receive a postcard home and badges for the following:
- Bronze- Going over and beyond
- Silver- Exceptional Community Spirit
