The acclaimed duo will deliver workshops and talks for the schools Year 8 and Year 9 pupils. Students will also have the opportunity to meet the authors in the library during lunch time and buy a copy of their book, at a discounted price, which can be signed on the day.

Steven Camden, is one of the most respected spoken word artists in the UK. Since 2007 he has performed his work internationally, as Polarbear, gracing stages from Kuala Lumpur to California via Glastonbury and The Royal Shakespeare Company. His work has featured on BBC Radio 1, 3 and 6. A published author, Steven has written three Young Adult novels: Tape, It's About Love, and Nobody Real. In July 2019 his debut poetry collection Everything All At Once was awarded the CLPE Poetry Award.

Children's novelist, Jenny McLachlan, has written several books including, her most recent novel The Land of RoarSun KissedFlirty Dancing and the award winning Truly Wildly Deeply. Having studied English at university, Jenny started her career as a secondary school teacher, something she loved and which encouraged her to write. She planned and started lots of different stories, which were all abandoned and pushed to the back of the drawer, then, one day, the plot for Flirty Dancing came together; her character’s story was so alive Jenny knew it was a story she would have to finish. In 2013, after attending the Winchester Writers’ Festival, Jenny plucked up the courage to send Flirty Dancing to a children’s fiction agent.  With dazzling speed she was then signed by Bloomsbury to write the four books in the series.

The MHS Book Festival is only possible due to the funding proved by The Jack Petchey Foundation. Last month they awarded MHS Librarian, Neva Hales, their Outstanding Leader Award. The scheme, which sees young people nominate adults who have inspired and supported them, highlights and recognises the incredible commitment of adults who work with schools and youth organisations and are dedicated to supporting young people.

  • Assemblies by Colchester United, Football in the Community

    Wed 16 Oct 2019

Last Week Colchester United, Football in the Community, delivered an assembly to our Year 7, 8, 9 and 10s on You vs. Train, the campaign they're supporting to educate and raise awareness of the dangers of the railway network to young people.

Did you know that 25,000 volts of electricity run through the overhead cables that power your train? Or that this power can jump? Or that trains can silently reach speeds of 125mph? Or that the power for the railway is never turned off?

Stepping on the tracks can result in life changing injuries and that’s why CUFITC is proudly supporting EFL Trust and the You Vs Train campaign, to educate our young people about the potential dangers of the railway.

They will also be back on 24th October to deliver assemblies to our Year 7 students on knife crime and Years 8 – 10 on radicalisation & extremism.
