Media Studies

Subject Leader - Mr D Shields

The media plays a central role in the lives of everyone, young and old. Our communities, our homes, even our bedrooms, are saturated with media. Whether it is the TV show we interact with by voting for our favourite singer, the newspaper we read for free online, the text message that tells us our team has scored, the film trailers we watch before the main feature, or the social networks where we catch up on the latest gossip, the media is inescapable.

Young people are, in many ways, the key target audiences for publishers, music promoters, games companies, and television networks. This is why Media Studies at Moulsham equips students with the tools to unpack, decode, and critically understand the messages and products they encounter every day.

The study of Media at Moulsham is rigorous and academic. Students learn to decode film and television texts through an appreciation of cinematography and mise-en-scène, analyse magazines and newspapers, and explore the role and impact of digital media. At the same time, their creativity is nurtured through a wide range of challenging practical tasks, including storyboards, full-length music videos, advertising campaigns, film trailers, websites, marketing packages, and feature articles.

The Media Studies department has grown rapidly, and we now offer GCSE and A Level courses in both Media Studies and Film Studies. Alongside these, students gain valuable hands-on experience of media production, developing industry-standard professionalism and creative confidence.

The Unchained Camera

Created by Moulsham High School’s Media Department, The Unchained Camera is a student-led film journal that celebrates the art and influence of cinema. Each issue features original essays, reviews, and creative reflections from students and alumni, exploring how film shapes the way we think, feel, and see the world.

The first issue, Inspirations, is out now. It delves into how film sparks creativity and identity, with thoughtful pieces on Velvet Goldmine, Little Women, Passing, Do the Right Thing, and more. Beautifully designed and written, this debut edition showcases the insight and passion of Moulsham’s film community.

Copies are available from the Film and Media Department
