Sports clubs are run before school, during lunch breaks and after school. They are very much on a ‘sport for all’ basis. We try hard to provide a wide range of activities that cater for all abilities. Many clubs are for improvers or are purely recreational, but there is also a wide range of inter-House competitions and school teams as we are also keen for students to play competitively.
In addition to the main team sports that we run, we compete in numerous district events organised by the Mid-Essex Secondary School Sports Association – including athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, cross country, gymnastics, netball, rounders, rugby, football (boys and girls), swimming, tennis and water polo, as well as county competitions in athletics, football (boys and girls), netball, rugby and cricket. Many of these competitions act as trials for county, regional and even national events and a number of students achieve representative honours at these levels.
Our school teams have been successful at local school level and in the past have progressed to regional and national tournaments. In the past year in cross country our Year 7 Boys, Sixth Form Boys and Year 8 Girls teams all won district championships, with individual winners in the Year 7 Girls and Year 8 Girls categories, and our Junior Girls team has qualified for the national final two years running. Football has seen the girls compete in three district finals, one Essex final and the finals of the Premier League Schools Tournament (representing Chelsea FC). The senior boys badminton team also made it through to the Essex finals this year, as did the Year 7 boys and girls indoor athletics teams and the Year 7/8 indoor cricket team.
On occasion, by special arrangement, the department is able to offer students the opportunity of specialist coaching – such as cheerleading, badminton, golf, squash, trampoline, or dodgeball.
